Louisiana is one of the country’s largest producers of oil and gas. It is the third-largest producer of natural gas in the United States, and many of the state's offshore drilling sites rest just off the southern coast. Louisiana has 15 active refineries, mostly located around Lake Charles and near the Mississippi River. These refineries account for about one-fifth of the country's total refining capacity.

Accidents at Louisiana Refineries

Louisiana's refineries are an integral part of the entire country's oil and gas industry. If they are poorly maintained or run by organizations that put profits over safety, accidents will happen.

Unfortunately, this has been proven time and again.

Below are some notable Louisiana plant and refinery accidents that have occurred in the state:

July 1976 – 11 workers are killed and dozens injured in an explosion at a Chalmette refinery
May 1988 – Explosion at Norco refinery kills 7 workers and injures 48 workers and nearby residents
December 1989 – Baton Rouge refinery explosion kills 1 worker and injures several others
August 1993 - Baton Rouge refinery explosion kills 2 workers and exposes residents to toxic fumes
January 2002 – Worked dies of chemical burns in Garyville refinery
March 2007 – 2 workers are injured after a Calumet refinery explodes
July 2008 – 3 workers suffer severe steam burns in an accident at ConocoPhillips refinery
August 2008 – ExxonMobil refinery fails to shut down before Gustav; 500,000+ lbs of toxins released
April 2009 – Contract worker falls to his death at the Marathon refinery in Garyville
October 2010 – Hydrogen sulfide leak kills worker at ExxonMobil refinery in Chalmette
March 2011 – 1 worker is injured and another is killed in a hydrogen sulfide accident at Norco refinery
August 2012 – 60 tons of carbon monoxide and 1 ton of benzene released from the Norco refinery
November 2014 – Accident at ExxonMobil refinery in Baton Rouge causes contract worker to lose leg
March 2015 - Contract worker is killed at Valero’s St. Charles Refinery in Norco
August 2016 - Explosion at refinery in St. James Parish leads to evacuation of 1,400 workers
November 2016 - Explosion at Baton Rouge refinery injures 4 workers
