About the Geismar, LA Chevron Plant

Located off Highway 30 and Highway 73, the Chevron Renewable Energy Group plant in Geismar plays a key role in the company's production of biodiesel and renewable fuels. Situated in Ascension Parish, an industrial hub for energy and chemical production, the facility is a fundamental player in Chevron’s efforts to advance sustainable energy.

However, incidents like this show how important it is for safety to come first in such high-risk environments. Hydrogen gas is highly flammable and poses significant risks in industrial settings. Its low ignition point means even a small spark can cause an explosion when mixed with air. Hydrogen also leaks easily due to its small molecular size, making proper storage, detection, and handling absolutely critical.

Plant operators like Chevron are responsible for implementing strict safety protocols, maintaining equipment, and training employees to manage hazardous materials. Failing to do so can lead to catastrophic events like this hydrogen gas explosion, putting workers and the community at risk.

Our thoughts are with the injured workers and their loved ones, and we will continue to monitor developments as more information becomes available.
