Energy Transfer Pipeline Explosion in La Porte, Texas Causes Fire & Evacuations

An Energy Transfer pipeline in La Porte, TX exploded just before 10 a.m. local time on Monday morning at the corner of Spencer Highway and East Boulevard. The sudden blast ignited a massive fire, raising immediate concerns for the safety of nearby residents and businesses.

Weather reports indicated the day would warm up into the mid-90s with no wind, allowing the flames to shoot straight up into the air. Although there were no noticeable gas odors, air quality remained a concern among residents.

No injuries were initially reported. As a precaution, evacuations were ordered between Luella Boulevard and Canada Road. Both Deer Park and San Jacinto College were ordered to shelter in place to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The pipeline explosion caused the power to flicker in the area, and as firefighters battled the flames, over 700 homes lost power, with 350 affected by the evacuation order.

The power outage also led to the evacuation of a nearby senior living center.

Markers onsite indicated pipelines for petroleum, methanol, dry gas, and methane. At this time, it’s unclear which fuel is involved in the fire.

KHOU 11 Energy Expert Ed Hirs commented, “...They’re trying to isolate exactly which pipeline it is. As we know, the Deer Park/Pasadena region, everything down along 225, is thick with pipes. The resource that’s fueling it needs to be located, we need to see where it’s going, and what valves can be turned to shut it down safely.”

Local oil and gas expert Bob Canvar said, “The way the fire looks, the smoke, it looks like a product or a crude line and not natural gas. Natural gas doesn’t tend to burn that dirty.”
