Grady County Oilfield Explosion Leaves 4 Injured
An explosion and subsequent fire at an oilfield near Bradley, Oklahoma, has left four people injured. The incident occurred in the afternoon of July 8, 2024, at a mobile workover rig situated near County Road 2920, on the north side of Highway 19, between Lindsey and Bradley. The injured parties were initially taken to local hospitals and later transported to Oklahoma City for further treatment.
The Grady County Fire Department responded promptly to the explosion, which occurred about an hour south of Oklahoma City. Chief Rodney Gregory reported that after extinguishing the initial flames, new fires continued to ignite due to the heat from the equipment on site. The fire could burn for several days, which, according to Gregory, is a safer way to handle the contaminants.
Fire crews remain on the scene to ensure the blaze is contained and the area remains safe.
"In almost 30 years, this is maybe the sixth or seventh one I’ve seen in this county," Gregory said. The fire department had to move their trucks back after assessing that the rig was structurally compromised and posed additional risks.
Red Rock Oil and Gas operates the site, and all victims appear to be employees.
As investigations continue, we are all reminded of the inherent risks associated with oilfield operations and the importance of safety protocols to prevent harm. Oil and gas companies—and all employers—must put safety first in order to protect their workers from catastrophes such as this.
Our hearts go out to the workers and families affected by this incident, and we will continue to follow the details of this incident and subsequent investigation as they emerge.
