Milby High School Student in Fatal Union Pacific Train Accident
On Monday morning, a 15-year-old student of Milby High School in HISD was struck by a slow-moving Union Pacific train while trying to get to school on time. The incident occurred around 7:30 AM; emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
The stretch where the Union Pacific train struck the student has been a source of complaints and warnings for years now, a report from ABC 13 revealed. In just the last year, there have been two complaints filed with the Federal Railroad Administration about students climbing through or on top of rail cars to get through the crossing. Parents and neighbors have been voicing their fears about a railroad accident here for even longer. Their complaints have often focused on the train schedule.
Students Blocked from Getting to School
The issue is that the Union Pacific freight train passes through that location at the precise time students are getting to school. Classes at Milby High School start at 7:50 in the morning, but the slow-moving train passes through at 7:30 AM. Students have no bridge or path that allows them to safely pass.
Union Pacific and other parties have known about this obvious hazard for years. They’ll need to answer for the young man whose life was cut short because they didn’t address the dangerous grade crossing sooner.
Our hearts and prayers go out to the young man’s family and the whole Milby High School community. We hope you get justice for the loss you’ve suffered.
