Three Workers Injured in Fall at Pasadena Chevron Plant

This afternoon, three workers were injured in a fall accident at the Chevron plant in Pasadena, TX. The three men, believed to be contractors, reportedly fell 25 feet from a temporary structure inside the plant. One of them was transported via Life Flight to the hospital; the other two were taken by ambulance.
There are more than 10,000 accidents involving temporary structures or scaffolding every year. All of these accidents are preventable through proper safety practices and equipment, from thorough inspection to enforcing the use of safety harnesses. Fall protection is a critical part of workplace safety, especially for industrial sites where hazards come with higher stakes.
When tasked with working 25 feet up, workers deserve every possible protection available. Half of all fatal falls are from a height below 20 feet. Given the height these contractors were working at, there’s no reason they shouldn’t have been afforded multiple, redundant protective measures. Something must have gone catastrophically wrong for three workers to suffer serious injuries simultaneously.
The Pasadena Fire Marshal is currently investigating the accident. Our hearts go out to the three workers and their families; we hope for their full and speedy recoveries.
