About Pearland, TX
Located in Brazoria County in Texas, Pearland is a key city in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The city’s population was estimated at 125,990 as of July 2021 and had a total land area of 47.02 square miles, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Pearland has experienced a considerable amount of growth in the past decades and was ranked as the second-fastest growing city in Texas from 2000 through 2010.
Pearland was first settled in 1882 near a siding (low-speed section of a railroad track) along the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. The community was first named Mark Belt but in 1894, a man named Witold von Zychlinski filed a plat called “Pear-Land” with the Brazoria County courthouse. He had named it such because of the pear trees in the area, and the town soon became known as Pearland. Pearland’s early residents harvested a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and it was promoted as an “agricultural Eden.” In 1900 and again in 1915, however, hurricanes struck the region and decimated most of Pearland’s fruit trees. The city tried to rebuild, but a devastating freeze struck in 1918. It wasn’t until the 1930s that the area started to see real recovery and growth.
Today, Pearland serves as a home for many who commute to nearby employment centers, including Texas Medical Center and NASA at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Medical companies have sought Pearland as an attractive location for headquarters and other facilities, such as Kelsey-Seybold Clinic’s administrative building, Abbott, and Merit Medical Systems. The top five employers in Pearland are the Pearland Independent School District, Kelsey Seybold Clinic, City of Pearland, Alvin Independent School District, and Memorial Hermann Pearland Hospital.
